Congress and Funding of Department of Homeland Security

DHS BUDGET 4

CongressandFunding of Department ofHomeland Security

Resultof Congress Actions

LastFriday Congress passeda crucialbillthat authorizedgovernmentspending onthe departmentof homelandsecurity.Ithas beenanoverwroughtseven daysforthecivilservantsandstateofficersworkingin theDHS after failureof Congress to passa billthat would full funding of theDepartmenton 27 February (Parker, 2015). On thatdayDemocratsandRepublicans could onlyagreeon short-termbill,otherwiseall theoperationsof theDHS would havestalled.LastFriday theloomingdisasterof shutdownof theDHS wasavertedafter housespeaker(Republican) canvassed forenoughvotesto enablepassageof a billwithout conditions.Thefightover thefunding to theDHS hadstartedwhenRepublican soughtoverturnthePresident Obama executiveorderthat allowedundocumented immigrantsto remainin thecountry.LastFriday thevotefora fullfunding of theDHS meansthatCongress has averteda partialshutdown(Parker,2015).

Thebillwaspassedby 257 members,butonly75 Republicans supportedit.Thebillthat has hithertohas beensigned, andcorrespondingappropriationexecuted, has createda riftbetween Democrats andRepublicans since Obama’s executiveactionlatelastyear(Parker,2015). Republicans through massivepersuasionby theHouse speakeragreedto passs fullfunding anddroppedtheir pushforchangesthat would havewatereddown thepresident’sexecutiveorderon immigration(Parker,2015).

Thefullfunding of theDHS meansthatmorethan 200, 000 Americans that workwill continueto receivetheir monthlypaymentandgovernmentactionsrelatingto thedomesticsecuritywill gounhampered (Parker, 2015). Italsomeansthatundocumented immigrantswill continueto enjoysafehavenin United States as theexecutiveorderby President Obama remainsinoperation.Finallythefailureof Republicans to pushtheir agendaevenwith themajorityin bothhousesmeansthat, theyneedto gettheir housein orderiftheyare goingto achieveanymeaningfulresultsin governingthisyear.
