ConnectSession Memo

TherewereseveralengineersandscientistswhoattendedtheEngineering Connect session, andtheyworkedon variousGrand Challenges. Someof thegrandchallengesby theNational Academy of Engineering includeEnergyandEnvironment, health,security,learningandcomputation.Dr. Abdol Esfahanian workedon directedgraphs,Dr. Richard Enbody handledComputer Security, Dr. Matt Mutka workedon computernetworking, sensors, sensor devices, robots, teleroborationandnetworking robots.Dr. Charles Owen handledgraphic, danceperformance.Hefocusedon Interactive danceperformancethrough phones.Dr. Eric Torng analyzed theefficiencyof computersystemswhileDr. Juyang Weng wasinvolvedin human-computerinteractions,mostimportantly virtualreality. His workinvolveda dancerwhowasinteractingwith theaudienceandtheyhavean influenceon theperformer.Eachof theengineerspickeda topicthattheywerewellknowledgeable. One of theitemsthat I learnedat theEngineering Connect sessionis thatthere has beenan evolutionofcomputing, anditis not about computersanymore.Accordingto Nicholas Negroponte, computing is nowabout living.Computersciencecan bedividedinto four areasandthisincludeshardwaresystems, software systems, computertheoryorscientifictheory.During thesession,I wasintroducedto thewidescopeof usesthat computershavein thesociety.Apartfrom their usein communicationandbusinessapplications, computersare usedin medicineto conductmedicalresearch, defense, law, security, environmentandenergy, governmentandfinance.Assuch,I wasableto understandthehugeimpactthatthecomputerindustryhas all theaspectsof overexistence. One of thetopicscoveredinthecourseof theConnect sessionwasbigdataandone of thefacultieswhohandlethisareais Dr. Eric Torng. During thissession, itwasnotedthatthere is alargeamountof informationthat isgeneratedas morepeoplehaveaccessto computing systems.Althoughmanypeopleignorethisdata, theycan be usedto generatean insightinto variousdomainssuchas politics, entertainmentandevenhealthcare. However, there is a shortageof skilleddata scientistswhocan analyzethisdataandusethem to makeappropriatedecisions.Asstatedby speakersduring thesession, someof theelementsinvolvedin handlingbigdata includean in-depth analysisof thescalability of existingalgorithms forbigdata, online analyticalprocessing andwarehousing of data(Foreman, 2013).One of theaspectsaddressedincludesdata miningthatare themethodsforlearningpredictiveanddescriptivemodelsfrom thedata whileengagingin interactive dataexplorationandvisualization methods. Theopportunityto attendtheEngineering Connect sessionhas mademe morecertainofmy careerchoice.During thesession,I interactedwith professionalsin thesectorandgotto knowabout theprojectsthat theyareengagedin.Whatstoodout to me wasthepenetrationof computersin all thefieldsof our lifeandtheimportantroletheyplay.Computershavemadeitpossibleforpeopletoimprovetheir livesby bringingtechnology that makeslifesimpler. It,therefore, showstheimportantrolethat theseprofessionalsplayin thesocietyandthehugeimpactof their workin thesociety. My biggestinfluencecamefrom Dr. Charles Owen whoseworkinvolvesan interactive danceperformancethatisenabledthrough one’sphone.Assuch,I am certainabout my careerchoice.
