HealthCareDisparityandHealthCareDelivery

Healthcaredisparityrefersto theinequalitiesthat takeplacein theaccessandprovisionof healthcareservicesacross ethnic, racial, andsocioeconomic groups.Althoughthehealthdisparityisusuallyviewedthrough thelensof ethnicity orrace, disparitycan occurin otherdimensions, suchas sexualorientation, disabilitystatus, location, age, andgender(Mandal, 2015).

Thereis sufficientdata toprovetheexistenceofthe disparityin theAmerica. Accordingto Mead, Cartwright, Jones, Ramos &amp Siegel (2008) 44 %, 54 %, and52 % of theBlack, Hispanic, andAsian patientsrespectivelydonot gethealthcarewhenneeded.Thesimilarsurveyindicatedthat8.9 % of theBlack American families,6.2 % Hispanic, and17 % of theAmerican Indian familieshadat leastof thefamilymembersgowithout receivingordelayedhealthcare.Thismeansthathealthdisparityin theU.S. is a reality.

Locationdisparities, wherepeoplelivingin theruralareasare lessdonot accessqualityhealthcareservicescomparedto peoplelivingin theurbanareasis an exampleofthe disparityaffectingtheU.S. healthcaresystem.Thischallengecan be addressedby increasingthenumberof healthcarefacilitiesin theunderserved ruralareasas wellas thenumberof healthcareprofessionals(Katz, 2012). Buildinghospitalsanddeploying healthcareproviders intheruralareaswill bringservicescloserto theruralresidents, which will givean equalopportunityto accesshealthcareas theurbanresidents.

Casesof healthcaredisparityshould bereportedto specialdepartmentsorunitsestablishedby hospitalsto handlesuchcases.Forexample, theGeneral Hospital of Massachusetts has its ownCenter forDisparities Solution (Menino, 2014). Theanti-disparity unitshould be thefirstreportingcenterbefore consideringexternalagencies, suchas thelocalDepartment of Health andCenter forPrevention of Health Service Issues. Theissueof healthcaredisparityis urgentanddeservesimmediateattentionbecausethenumberof theminorityAmericans is increasing, which meansthatperpetuationof healthcaredisparitywill affecta largerproportionof thenationalpopulation.
