Implementinga Strategic Plan
Determinationof whether the adaptive strategies chosen for an organization are themost effective is a critical aspect since it helps an organization tobe certain of the goals that it desires to achieve. In the case ofWakeMed Hospital, it can use the SWOT analysis tool in establishingwhether the adaptive strategies would be the most effective for theorganization in attaining its goals. The SWOT analysis tool isusually based on looking at the strengths and opportunities availablefor an organization in accomplishing set goals of the organizationand how the strengths and opportunities can be used in overcomingthreats and weaknesses of the organization. In case, the availableorganization’s strengths and opportunities have the capacity ofovercoming the threats and weaknesses available, then an adaptivestrategy is considered as being effective in assisting anorganization in attaining its goals (Sadeghi,2013). However, in case opportunities and strengths available for anorganization cannot be in a position of overcoming threats andweaknesses of an organization, then an adaptive strategy for anorganization cannot be considered effective and there is no need ofconsidering such a strategy. The SWOT analytical tool can be used inthis case by considering strengths and opportunities available toWakeMed Hospital together with the weaknesses and threats of theorganization. Then, the strengths and opportunities should beevaluated so as to get a clear view whether they can be in a positionto overcome the threats and weaknesses of the organization. Forinstance, WakeMed has a weakness in that it has a low financialmuscle however, such a weakness can be overcome by the strength theorganization has of increased government support.
Bothinternal and external factors are exceedingly significant in ensuringsuccess of the proposed strategies. According to Day (2012), mergingof external and internal factors in search of competitive advantageis a constant procedure, as the organization must progress and adjustwith the environment. Therefore, it is momentous for the organizationto check its internal and external factors and identify factors thatcould become a barrier to the success of the available strategies. Aninternal factor that may become a barrier to the success of theorganization’s proposed strategies is availability of smallinfrastructure. From the environmental analysis, it was noted thatthe organization has a small infrastructure platform for meeting thedemand of customers. This may become a barrier to the attainment ofsuccess of the proposed strategies since a large infrastructureplatform would be needed to meet the objective of meeting customerdemands. In order to overcome this barrier, the organization wouldneed to expand its infrastructure platform. This would allow theorganization to be in a position to meet the demand of customers,which is a critical objective in the realization of its proposedstrategies. On the other hand, an external factor that may become abarrier towards the success of the proposed strategy is governmentpolicy. The organization lacks a regulated platform, which may affectthe success of the proposed strategies because a government policymay affect the accomplishment of the strategies. In order to get ridof this barrier, the organization should ensure that it has aregulated platform and also keep in touch with any new governmentpolicies that may emerge. This will make sure that the organizationis on the safe side in attaining success of the proposed strategies.
Whenan organization decides to adapt a certain strategy, it is importantfor the organization to have a target population. Through the targetpopulation, an organization can be in a position to determine whetherthe strategy will be successful (Brysonet al, 2011). This is because it is through the target populationthat determines the loss or profit to be realized by a givenstrategy. The proposed strategies of the WakeMed Hospital entailopening a new facility and developing technologies that would ensureit remains financially stable. This would mean that the organizationwould need to consider market development. This implies that theorganization would need to introduce new services to the market amove that would mean that the organization would expand its segment.Because of the proposed strategy, the organization will need tointroduce telenursing as one its services. This would be critical tothe operations of the organization because it would offer thehospital with a new segment. Since there is a large number ofpatients that would like to get the services of the hospital withoutthe need of moving to the hospital because of the distance to thehospital for example, the elderly and those who work from home, thehospital can target these patients. Targeting such patients would beadvantageous to the organization since it would be capable ofmitigating the operating costs. Besides, the target segment is likelyto comprise of many individuals since customers would like theservice because there would be no need of moving to the hospital toseek services, and it would be possible to talk to a doctor any timeprovided the patient has the necessary technological devices. On theother hand, the market segment would also comprise people of all agesas the organization opens a new facility and develops technologiesthat would ensure it remains financially stable. This is becausepeople of all ages are likely to seek the services of the hospital.
Servicedelivery would be a critical consideration in the implementation ofthe strategic plan for WakeMed. This is because it would help incustomers in choosing whether to obtain services from the hospital orfrom another hospital since service delivery may vary with hospitals.In service delivery, there are three elements that incorporate thecreation or production of health care services these includepoint-of-service, pre-service, and after-service (Brysonet al, 2011). Depending on the strategy adopted by a healthorganization, any of these service delivery aspects can be chosenprovided the selected aspect would be the most effective. The mosteffective approach that would be used for the target customers indelivering of telenursing services would be point-of-serviceactivities. These activities would be the most effective since theywould ensure patient satisfaction since the activities concentrateson developing value during service delivery. Point-of-serviceactivities are also critical and most effective since they ensurequality of services offered and can permit process innovation as theycreate value. For example, point-of-service activities may developvalue through ensuring no delays, offering painless procedure, andhaving informative and courteous personnel. Although after-serviceactivities may also be adopted by the WakeMed Hospital, due tofollow-ups as the practitioners offer assistance, point-of-servicesactives still emerge as the most effective for the target customerssince they ensure quality and satisfaction, which may not requirefollow-ups.
Inorder to effectively support the strategic direction of theorganization, it is critical for the management to cultivate aculture that will promote efficiency in service delivery, teamwork,and professionalism. Besides, effective communication structureswithin the organization would also be required in order tosuccessfully accomplish the strategic direction. Therefore, in orderto support the strategic direction within its culture and structureeffectively, the organization will need to train its employees on howto cultivate the required culture within the organization. Theorganization can organize training of employees through differentprograms. This will help in making employees of the organization wellequipped in adapting to the culture of the organization. For example,teamwork can become developed in the organization through trainingemployees on how to work as a team, which can later be effected intothe organization through organizing employees into teams.Professionalism can be introduced to the organization throughregularly offering refresher training to the employees. On the otherhand, efficiency within the organization can be introduced throughensuring that employees get thorough training in their practicingareas. In addition, effective communication structures can besupported within the organization through introducing internalcommunication technologies that are user-friendly to employees of theorganization. In case new communication technologies are introducedto the organization, employees should be trained on how to use thetechnologies. This would ensure that employees communicateeffectively within the organization in order to lead the organizationto its strategic direction. Furthermore, the communication structureof the organization needs to support communication amid employees andthe management of the organization so as to effectively foster thestrategic direction of the organization.
Strategicresources of an organization are critical in ensuring that anorganization achieves its strategic goals. Different strategicresources of the WakeMed Hospital can be used effectively in order tosupport the organization in attaining its strategic goals. Thefollowing paragraphs provide information on how finance, humanresources, facilities, and IT strategic resources are instrumental insupporting WakeMed Hospital to achieve its strategic goals.
Financeresources emerge as the standard for evaluating an organization’sperformance thus, finance has the role of monitoring and determiningmeasurable and specific financial strategic objectives, whichsupports the organization in operating effectively and efficiently(Sadeghi,2013). Therefore, the resource can be helpful in supporting thestrategic goals of WakeMed Hospital through determining whether thegoals of the organization are measurable and specific. For example,the organization can use the finance resources available inestablishing whether the financial goals are attainable.
Humanresources are critical resources to an organization because it isdifficult to attain an organization’s goals without proper humanresources (Wittmann& Reuter, 2008). The human resources can be instrumental to theWakeMed Hospital in achieving strategic goals because the humanresources can be used in the provision of the services that theorganization desires to have in the attainment of its strategicgoals. For example, it is important for WakeMed to offer serviceseffectively through understanding the needs of customers in order toattain its strategic goals this will need the use of its humanresources.
Facilitiesof an organization are critical towards the attainment of strategicgoals since these facilities are used in the provision of theservices that are within the strategic plans of the organization.Therefore, to the WakeMed Hospital, facilities of the organizationwould be helpful in the provision of services to consumers a movethat would of immense importance in meeting customers’ demand,which is a strategic goal of the hospital. Therefore, facilities ofthe organization would be supportive in the achievement of WakeMed’sstrategic goals.
Informationtechnology is a critical resource to an organization since it helpsin fostering communication amid the stakeholders. WakeMed Hospitalwould need this resource in ensuring that there is effectivecommunication amid its employees and the management. This is becauseeffective communication emerges as a significant element in ensuringthat the organization achieves its strategic objectives. Forinstance, effective communication would make employees offer serviceseffectively, which is a strategic goal of the organization.
Thestrategic plan of WakeMed Hospital aligns with the mission and visionof the organization. It is the vision of the WakeMed to make theinstitution the most preferred health care organization in the regionin the provision of high-quality technological leadership and patientcare.For the vision to happen, the institution must ensure that itsemployees, volunteers, and physician have skilled capacities andquality education. This aligns with the strategic plan since the planwould focus on developing technologies that would support the vision.On the other hand, it is the mission of the hospital to offercompassionate and outstanding care to all people who seek theirservices. This mission aligns with the strategic plan of theorganization since the plan focuses on strong values and goals thatwould aid in keeping to the mission.
Inorder to track the effectiveness of the proposed strategic plan forthe organization, it is critical to utilize some strategies thatwould determine how well the organization is prepared to meet itsstrategic plan. One of the strategies that can be used to track theeffectiveness of the strategic plan is determining whether the goalsare attainable and measurable (Goetsch,2005). The strategic goals should be in a position to fit within theavailable resources. In case the goals do not much the resources,then the strategic plan is not effective. Besides, another strategyentails determining whether the internal and external environments ofthe organization are favorable towards the strategic plan. Inaddition, the organization can also check the effectiveness of itsstrategic plan through risk assessment. Through risk assessment, itis feasible to establish whether the strategic plan is effective.
Astrategic plan is critical to an organization because it helps inindicating the direction that an organization is taking. The proposedstrategies of the WakeMed Hospital entail opening a new facility anddeveloping technologies that would ensure it remains financiallystable. WakeMed Hospital can use the SWOT analysis tool inestablishing whether the adaptive strategies would be the mosteffective for the organization in attaining its goals. This wouldentail looking at how effective the organization can use itsopportunities and strengths in overcoming threats and weaknesses. Itis important for the organization to check its internal and externalfactors and identify factors that could become a barrier to thesuccess of the available strategies. The strategic plan of theorganization aligns with the mission and vision of the organization.
