TheFMLA Act of 1993, is a United States federal law that requirescovered employers to for, workersjob-protected and unpaid leave for skilled medical and familyreasons. TheFamily and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) entitles the eligible employees ajob-protected leave for specified family or medical reasons. Whereasthe workers are unpaid, they continue to enjoy health insurancecoverage and other benefits under the similar terms and conditions asthose employees that have not taken leave (Waldfogel,2009).Even though FMLA have proved to accrue some benefits to the employeeand the employer, it has unquestionably caused enormous burden to theemployers.

Tobegin with, employers have seen an increase in number of peopletaking leave on FMLA reason. Years after its enforcement, the numbersof employees taking leaves have increased (Waldfogel,2009).This has forced the employers to employ supplement employers mainlyon the contract terms, translating to a financial burden. However,this depends on the number of the employees the organization has,with the largest organizations getting the enormous burden.

Secondly,FMLA has created competition among the employers providing the FMLAservices and those do not. This has forced all employer to offerthese services for the fear of losing employees (Waldfogel,2009).Therefore, causing a burden in terms of insurance and provision ofother services incurs the employers an extra cost. Finally, theemployers have suffered a lot in terms of intermitted leaves. Thenumber of intermittent leaves administered in the name of FMLA hasincreased. The poor timing of these leaves causes workforceshortages, especially on weekends when they are bored with the job(Waldfogel,2009).

Inconclusion, even as the employees enjoy the FMLA, the burden of FMLAto the employers is significant. This is in terms of increased numberof leaves and the cost of hiring extra employees. Therefore, theemployers need to institute additional measures to curb this effect.It’s clear, that the act has been applied in numerous cases by theemployees when it’s not necessary required. This has led to theemployers incurring losses when the employees take the leave.
