Aleader can use rewards and punishments to gain compliance from theirfollowers. Economic and ego awards such as bonuses and praise tomotivate the followers towards a particular objective. A punishmentwhich can be negated by withholding a reward or positive byinstituting a penalty is used to discourage certain behavior amongfollowers (Caroselli,2000).However, rewards and punishments are not always effective incontrolling the behavior of followers. The following scenario showshow rewards and punishments can fail sometimes.

Jamesis the is the overall Leader/Manager in the ABC sugar company.Recently, he has noted a decrease in the performance of his workers,and in turn looked for ways to improve their performance and in turnincrease their productivity. He promised to take them for a 2-weeksholiday, at the end of the financial year, the East Coast BeachResort. Despite his promise to the employees, the performance didn’timprove to the expected level. James was disappointed as his employeeproductivity never achieved the expected level. In this case, James`use of reward failed to yield the expected result.

Thereason as to why this method of reinforcing behavior failed ismajorly because the reward promised in return for improvedperformance was not immediate. It happened at the end of the year,therefore the followers do not relate it to their behavior. For areward or punishment to be effective, it should follow the behaviorimmediately (Howell,2006).The other reason could be because the leader used an economic rewardwhich is an extrinsic motivator, so the change in performance did notcome from the heart of the followers. There are various situationsthat require a leader to require to institute punishment. Thisincludes a poor performance by followers, breaking of the law and notfollowing the rules and regulations laid down. The leader should payattention to some situational factors so as to increase theeffectiveness of controlling behavior using rewards or punishment.
