UNDERSTANDING THE PLAYING FIELD 6
Nipping work conflict issues from the budding stages is imperativeat work. Those words would have made a great difference had Carlosand Phena solved their personal issues before calamity struck in themultimillion-delta electronics export and Import Company. The purposeof this paper is to examine a first-hand workplace conflict observed, with an aim of understanding the role of work ethics in the playingfield.
Since Carlos told Phena’s husband that she was cheating on himwith their ex-manager, the long lasting family friendship ties werebroken greatly affecting their work relations. Phena who was on theverge, of losing her marriage and job, was at a crisis that was beingreflected in her attitude towards Carlos. Phena was obviouslyconflicting work ethics by dating a fellow employee. Besides that,Phena who was working under Carlos had suddenly developed a negativeattitude towards her manager and was about to lead the entire companyinto a major crisis. Phena did not turn up to seal the deal withCarlos from import dealers for a five-year contract. The deal wouldfacilitate more company purchases and increase local andinternational client base. Phena never turned up for the crucialmeeting. She ignored all the calls from her manager and co-workersand ignored all the messages and reminders sent to get her attentionregarding this issue.
The whole scenario looked like a plot by Phena and her ex-managerwho was the company’s director. Apart from being the director, hewas also dating her. It appeared as though the source of conflict wasPhena and her ex-manager having plotted everything to see get back toCarlos. His downfall after failing to secure the contract wasdefinite. Failing to secure this contract also meant that the CEOwould lose his trust in Carlos and most probably fire him. The wholefive-year contract was a genuine idea by Carlos after seeing thecompany struggle to secure a stable deal for the past one decade.
The concept and theoretical application of work ethics revolvearound decisions to do the right thing as stipulated by the worknorms and values. According to Chester (2012), work ethics is a termthat refers to the ability to do the right thing. In a work, set upwork ethics becomes questionable when good people do what othersconsider bad. Getting romantically involved with an employee isconsidered unethical as in the case of Phena. Plotting against anemployee is also termed as unethical leading to work conflicts as ithappened to Carlos.
To understand why employees and individuals do not adhere to workethics we will review the role of interpersonal and intrapersonalperception. Interpersonal perception includes how two or more peopleunderstand or put across a message. On the concept of communication, interpersonal communication involves sending or receiving a messagedirectly or face to face. Carlos and Phena’s interpersonalrelationship was affected by Phena’s conflict of work ethics.Intrapersonal perceptions involve one’s form of relaying messages. It entails what one thinks and what occurs in your mind.Intrapersonal thoughts determine how one works and relates to others.Employees can improve intrapersonal perceptions by focusing on thepositive and correct thoughts especially at work. When you focus ondoing right things, it becomes impossible to experience work ethicchallenges.
Incompatible goals in Carlos and Phena’s conflict affect work andrevolve around ethics. While Carlos feels that Phena is contradictingwork ethics by relating with an employee while married, Phena seemsto be ignoring that fact and decides to plot against Carlosvengefully. This affects their work relations and greatly compromisesthe company. According to Wahyudi et al.(2013), work ethics affectsperformance and commitment to work. As personal issues come betweenCarlos and Phena, issues that are more ethical emerge. Carlos andPhena are incompatible in many ways. Phena does not support Carlosfive-year contract and misses to attend the meeting that would havesealed the five-year contract. In other words, she does not believein supporting Carlos’s move to advance the company and is willingto compromise her work ethics to see Carlos fail.
My position in this discussion greatly revolves around work ethicsas a concept that can cause challenges at work places. Work ethicsputs to test employees personal values, commitment to right or wrong, integrity and moral beliefs (Chester, 2012). While this case does notinvolve a major fraud disaster or funds misappropriation, which is,all against work ethics it has managed to interfere with Delta firm’ssmooth running. The discovery of the office affair led to plottingagainst Carlos. Compromising on work values because of personalissues could have been solved had Carlos and Phena resolved theirpersonal differences in the initial stages. I feel that the situationat Delta should have been solved in the early stages to avoid futureproblems.
In conclusion, had Carlos and Phena solved their personaldifferences as soon as they cropped up the situation would have beendifferent. Work ethics remains a great challenge for many firms.Suitable solutions and remedies for work ethics should be implementedto avoid problems cropping from employees to the company resulting inlosses. Disciplinary measures against Phena would be an appropriateway to deal with work ethics. She will serve as an example to otheremployees who plan to follow her ways. Phena’s ex-manager has alsoportrayed unethical behaviors requiring strict measures to be takenagainst him. Disciplinary measures taken by companies include forcedleave, resignation or letters of warning.
